Choosing the right foundation for your complexion is not easy. But knowing the meaning of tone, undertone and overtone can help you. Here's how.

Tone, undertone and overtone... How many delclinations does skin color have? The complexion of each of us, is very complex. The overlapping of these three color layers gives us our natural complexion. That's why finding the perfect foundation can be a challenge.

The meaning of warm, cold, fair or dark seems like a secret reserved only for makeup professionals. But we will show you that it is not so and that knowing them can help us choose the right color of foundation for a flawless face makeup base.

What is undertone and how to find out?

The undertone corresponds to the predominant shade of our skin and can also be called by the term "temperature."

There are three basic subtones: warm (warm) , neutral (neutral) and cold (cold).

  • Warm: indicates all skin with golden complexion, such as Mediterranean beauties.
  • Neutral: includes all colorites that are in the middle between warm and cool.
  • Cold: corresponds to pinkish skin, typical of Nordic countries.

To understand our complexion you don't need to be a make-up expert.

For example, taking the color of one's veins as a reference is one of the most effective and valid methods of recognition. Just look at the inside of your forearm: if the veins appear blue in color then your temperature will be cool and your complexion rosy. If, on the other hand, they are green it means that warm is your undertone, if you recognize yourself in both you most likely belong to the neutrals.

Melanin, carotene and hemoglobin are the main genetic factors affecting skin temperature. The warm complexions usually tend toward orangey and the cool complexions toward pinkish.

After defining the undertone, it is essential to recognize one's skin tone.

What is tone?

The tone or face tone is the height of the color: fair, medium and dark are the macrocategories that group a wide range of skin colors.

  • FAIR represents the clear and very clearembodiments.
  • MEDIUM includes all mediums: the olive, dark and tanned complexions-such as the Tan color.
  • DARK starts from dark complexions to very darkcomplexions, including very tanned skin.

Finding one's tone and undertone is crucial, but it is not enough to be sure of theright foundation color. The final word, in fact, is overtone.

What is overtone?

The overtone of the skin is given by the staining of the surface layer of the epidermis, which is visible with immediate effect to the naked eye.

It can be considered a mix given by tone, undertone and the reactions our skin has to external factors, which make it more yellowish or pinkish.

The latter, while little considered, is crucial to being able to create a perfect make-up base.

Finding the right foundation

How many times has it happened that you bought the wrong foundation? Have you tried it on your forearm, on your inner wrist...yet on your face it was impossible to achieve even simple makeup!

This is because in order to find the suitable shade for one's skin tone, one must take the gap between the neck and chin as a reference.

How? Simple, first keep in mind the directions on how to find tone and undertone and exclude foundations that are too dark or those that are too light for your complexion. Take a small amount of those that might be right for you and pat it on, blending it evenly, in the area between your neck and face.

If it is imperceptible to the eye, then it is your perfect foundation!
